“Some limited access” is right… In a CWMU, private landowners have
landlocked public land and are compensated by the DWR with several,
highly-valued elk and/or deer tags… leaving 1 or 2 for public draw, the
recipients of which are allowed far fewer days to hunt, and usually
directed to less productive areas of the CWMU…

Must be rough the rest of us have to hunt public lands where there are
hunters everywhere and hardly any elk

shooting fish in a barrell. Don’t get me wrong I would kill for something
like this. This is just a rich mans experience not what the masses can do.

Don’t give me hunting hard enough that statement is a joke on a CWMU

I know it’s hard to hunt on public lands. My staff and I still draw regular
tags & yes it’s harder to get the monsters out there. It’s the people in
charge of maintaining access & habitat that you should be angry with. They
are the reason it is so much nicer on the private side of the fence. You
still have to earn elk no matter where you hunt them, it’s just not as
likely you’ll get a chance to tag a monster. Good luck out there, shoot
strait & get a big one.

With that being said- I hope someday I make enough money that I can do a
CWMU hunt every once in a while. It seems it may be the only way to hunt
    quality animals in the future…

andyman, we are hunting with a rifle tag & the tag we choose is the CVA
muzzleloader. You’re correct if we were hunting on a muzzleloader permit,
    optics are forbidden.

The problem is that the people who run the CWMU units most of them have the
hunters that draw the tags hunt the worst times possible and let the paying
    customers hunt the prime time.

I removed my comment because I wasn’t sure if that was a magnifying scope.
It is NOT legal to use a magnifying scope in Utah on a muzzleloader,
regardless of the tag or season. Even on a rifle tag, that is an illegal
weapon. This is addressed specifically in the Utah Big Game Guidebook.

I understand that this is an ‘any legal weapon’ hunt. A scoped muzzleloader
with a magnification higher than 1X is not legal during the UT muzzleloader
season therefore it would not be permissible as an “any legal weapon”
choice of firearm being topped with that Burris scope during this hunt. I
don’t think that its the crime of the century, but look up R657-5-7.
Prohibited Weapons. (1) A person may not use any weapon or device to take
big game other than those expressly permitted in this rule.

Also: R657-5-10. Muzzleloaders. (1) A muzzleloader may be used during any
big game hunt, except an archery hunt, provided the muzzleloader: (a) can
be loaded only from the muzzle; (b) has open sights, peep sights, or a
    fixed non-magnifying 1x scope;
